It will ask you for the key. IT will give you the option to format the drive if you don't have the key to your current os.

The problem with windows, as you've surmised is it's written so that if you can't get upgrades constantly for security, it will stop working properly.

A better solution than down grading to XP home would have been to buy FIX IT by VCOM and use the one button "fix my computer" mode in that software suit. Save money and return "home" to the vendor.

You wont loose your data but you have to reinstall all your applications again.

When you install XP Home over XP Pro which XP Pro wont allow so you have to over write XP Pro and your programs wont work.

But all the files will be there. So overwrite XP and reinstall applications and most of your things would be back the same way they are.

But its always advisable to make a backup.

Still need clarification or help please get back to me.

slave the hard drive to a fresh xp home install and one by one the files. you can upgrade but you run a risk with the hack key still on your computer

no.

if i am not wrong, - and i had tried re-installing winxp - the other programs will not be kept when re-installing the winxp as the winxp cd will try to re-install everything from scratch.

if you didn't format or partition the hard drive, your data may highly still be there after re-installing winxp.

ps: it is advisable to copy your data to another hard drive before re-installing winxp.
