Good for you- we are the masters, right? Well, maybe the cats don't recognize that, but perhaps we can be at least more clever? I read all of the answers, and many of them were accurate- try some. I have 6 cats and each has decided whether or not they're interested in the Christmas tree. If determined, they'll get in it. We first tried putting very jingly ornaments on the tree, so that would alert us to come shoo them away, but that got annoying in the middle of the night. Later we tried attaching ugly plastic grocery bags to the lower limbs, then aluminum foil- all of which they must have had a good laugh at. We've even tried the table top idea- but it's really akward with a 6 foot tree! Now, years of Christmases later, we firmly base the tree so it doesn't tip over, put breakable/precious ornaments up higher and more securely attached. We've developed a rather disturbing noise to yell when they attempt to turn the tree into a toy which is something like, "Aaaannnn!!" At least it distracts them and makes us think once again we are the masters, not the cats. Merry Christmas!

As you work for your company, any money that is placed in the till is property of the company.

Any money that the employer gives you is required by law to be tax for HMRC.

If the employer registers for TRONC, then they may be exempt from such tax, but that is an issue that the employer needs to deal with.

Tips are a great legal and political (Social) minefield. A consultant would normally charge for this advice, but have it for free.

1) Institute a tip jar at the till that the shifts tips are put in and divided up at the end of night between the on duty staff. To comply with HMRC, it is important that someone of a non-management capacity must do the dividing (Management must not even get involved)

2) Speak to the IRS to advice on what is best to do

3) All employees pocket all tips straight away.

Ask your employer to make a choice, or to take advice on what to do. Tips improve employee morale, and having a clear cut decision allows the employer to retain control whilst dealing with the issue. If they want, let them contact me.

What a mean person he must be. If he is doing this then tell the customers who tip you that you don't want the tip because your greedy fat cat boss is pocketing it. When I tip a waitress there is no way I want the boss to have it, that's why they are underpaid so they can have the tips as a bonus.

Some hotels etc operate a tronc system and the management divide the tips between the staff and sometimes themselves. Income tax has to be applied by the management in such systems

The tips are yours, you earned them for the service you give. Whos to say he doesn't lie about the til being down, does he check ? In America its an unwriten rule that you have to tip 25% of the bill for the service provided. This tight s**t needs sorting out, you and your workmates should stick together on this one and confront him.

No its not on,he is stealing money from you. When a customer tips, that money is for you,not the bar or restaurant. If he does it again tell the customers and shame him.If he sacks you and it goes to a tribunal,he would lose, big style.Who is to say he is not the one robbing the till? All right if he gets away with it.He robs, you pay.If he tried to keep my tips i would chop his fingers off.

What is the written policy of the company? If there is none, ask for a start.
