Counseling is listening and advising to help the person who went through the experience. (Example: a released hostage is helped to deal with the traumatic feelings associated with the experience.)

Debriefing is questioning and listening to that person to learn from what the person when through. (Example: a released hostage may be debriefed to get info which will help authorities get other hostages free.)

debriefing- To question to obtain knowledge or intelligence gathered especially on a military mission.
