Don't try to catch their "eyes"...do your best to capture their imagination, while avoiding tabloid style journalism.

You can only do this if you have an imagination of your own.

Make sure you don't stop reading, just because you have a job writing.

Read a lot of short stories.

You may not like Hemmingway, but a big part of his success was that he learned a lot of his craft covering European conflicts. He once said, "Write one true thing...then write another"

Deadlines on newspapers and periodicals tend to squelch this type of free thinking, so you have to decide how much of your own time (off the clock) you are going to invest in your job.

That's why war correspondants often turn into some of the best writers...because they LIVE their stories.

Never allow yourself to think that you are either above or below a story. Cultivate your ability to listen (instead of just gathering facts) and the hook will appear as if by magic.

The heart of the story is not always found in the answers to the questions you ask, but rather in the comments that people volunteer on their own.

If you insist on straight answers to straight questions, you may get the story right, but there won't be anything unique to grab the reader by her imagination.

Have a great career. My dad was a newspaper editor, and he always said he wished he could have remained a reporter. He loved to write MUCH more than he liked to edit.

be the first to catch or to announce a major news specially happening to an artist or her/his husband-wife and same goes for a politician. one of them dies or has a major accident and you have big news. i am thinking of the President of Iran -- right now that needs a corrective action in his life-span and you will get major news, same goes for the Korean dictator on the world news. on the local scene --depending on where you live -- new york could give you clue to umpteen occasions and hope nothing happens there. Make your own conclusion after whom and when you will start moving for your next article. hope it helps.
