What kind of fish are in the tank with him? I have a puffer (hawaiian spotted puffer) Puffers are unusual fish. If he is pale there are a few reasons for this............. 1.) Water quality. If a Local fish store checked your water then, get another option. Take another sample of your water to a different store to have it tested. This would be me first guess. Water quality plays a HUGE role in the life of the fish. Also check the saltinity in your tank. Most saltwater fish prefer the salinity between 1.021-1.025. Use your hydrometer. Fill the meter with water from the tank, bang it a few times on the counter to get the bubbles off the dial, then read! If your salt isn't between 1.021-1.025 and it is low. Then in a bucket of fresh water from the tap, mix your salt till it reads between 1.021-1.025. Add STRESS COAT to decloranate the water, then add the water. 2.) Someone in the tank is harassing him. When fish stress its caused by the water quality - or - stress. If you don't figure out what caused this he will die of STRESS. Watch you fish. Saltwater fish are the MOST territorial fish there are. If he's in the territory of another fish, he will become harassed! The other fish's terrirtory could be a ways away from him but, doesn't like him there. Change you aqua scape around! Move plants from one end of the tank to the other, move rocks, ect so EVERYTHING is different. The fish will FORGET there terrirtory and will have to start over to reastiblish there territory... This will give the puffer a chance to find one. Fish remember there territory by a certian plant, rock ect. They remember to go back there to hang out or sleep there...... If you move it, or take it away, they forget and become LOST! They start to find a new home and territory. The puffer needs to find his place or territory. If all the territories are already astibished. He will have a hard time and will NOT find his own territory! As a result he will remain stressed and die. Make sure there are A LOT of hiding places for him. In case he becomes in trouble with another fish he can get away and hide! Good luck! Julie

It's sad when you have a favourite tropical fish and you think it's doing alright then suddenly that happens. There could be a few things that could be wrong with it. My guess is it could need a tonic. I used to be a fish keeper and i have kept a few species of fresh water tropicals. One kind that I made a favourite was an archer. I bought it from the dealer who kept it in fresh water. I had it for four years...then suddenly just like yours...it went pale and died. I looked up in my fish book and it said that archers prefer brackish water. does that throw any light on your problem. I really hope your puffer does not die.

Call a vet and ask he/she, if the vet can't answer than maybe she can direct you to someone who could.
