This is a baseball category but I note that most of the answers seem to be related to India generally, or politically. Maybe what stops India from being the best in the world is asking the wrong queston in the wrong forum. Other than that I think India is a very great country now and so then I question does being the greatest in the world mean that you would like to become a super power with a large military and dominance in your region? If so, then it is a misguided goal. The US, Russia and China ended up superpowers by default following a World War and it has hurt their internal social structure and economies because they have so many external responsiblities. The US is the best example as American youth serve in the military and are sent to hot spots around the world to solve problems that do not affect them personally, and the economy of the US is heavily impacted by some feeling that they must help every foreign nation and try to keep everyone in the world from starving. Lofty goals but more important to non Americans than to US citizens as individuals execpt for the feeling of helping out (those who will hate them anyhow whenever some nationalist or cleric needs an issue to seek power in the third world) Beyond that, I guess play baseball, its fun, addictive and is a good place to show sportsmanship.

Since you posed this question under Baseball, you must mean what stops India from being the best in the world in baseball.
I think the best Indian baseball players should come to the US and prove themselves here first, before we are willing to believe how good they are.

No it is not corruption it is not fate- it is the politicians- starting from the Nehru/Indira regime- The only people who have benefited are the politicians- now finally we are realising let them get fat but lets get fat too!
We are innovative, we are survivors, in fact it was good that the US neglected us- we developed self reliance- if we remember that we do not need to align ourselves to either Russia or china or US we'll be better off.
We are unstoppable- we need to ensure that we provide for those in our villages- develop those Rs100 computers- computers will level the playing field-
Encourage each village to look out for its welfare- don't fall for the free TVs and sand lorry operators-hey are not vested in u-
The rising education will makes us strong- but tell those politicians- Hindi or Tamil or Kannada is not going to cut it we need to be multilingual- look at the malayalees and mumbayyas
China is a power that has been unleashed- with the vast mineral deposits of Tibet and working Africa and south America - it will be unstoppable yes we should sing Hindi chini bhai bhai- but remember the Gita- brothers do fight brothers!
Democracy is fine but oligarchy is the new model- let every one benefit!

Rather than aiming to make the Indian Team as a number one Team, our players want to be number one player by themselves.
This selfishness makes our Indian Team to never reach the desiered goals, but, huge number of individual players crossing milestones.

They have too many gaps in their distribution of wealth. They need to fix the poverty in order to overtake China and Japan as the superior Asian country.
