I'm knocking on a bit now and work a flat 41.5hour week. Last week I e-mailed my boss asking to have my hours reduced to 35 hours *(at no cost to the company!)* - I've been refused and they said you have to be over 65 which sounds daft to me as surely that's retirement!

There is no EU law to cover this. If you were a parent of a disabled child or have a child under the age of 5 there is a family friendly policy which only gives you the right to ask. it does not force the company to agree. I am afraid this is an age old issue of a company sticking to the contractual obligation that you both signed up to - it works both ways they would need to consult and agree with you to change it if they wanted to. You may be better sitting down face to face with your boss and explaining mutual benefits to the company ie better quality from you as you will not be so tired etc. Good luck

Need to look at your employment contract, 41.5 hours is not a great deal to work anyway, I used to work 48-50 hours a week every week! Your employer simply observes the 48 hour working week directive, if you work more then 48 hours, then you ahve the right to ask for a reduction, but what you're doing is a normal working week
