It all comes down to short and long-term effects.
In the short term, tans usually look great. I prefer a natural tan to a fake-and-bake or bottle tan.
In any case, constant tanning over a long period of time will dry out and age the skin. I've seen "sun-worshippers" that look many years older than they actually are. Their skin has more wrinkles, and more age-spots, etc.
In any case, I have yet to see a woman who looked bad simply because she didn't have a tan. Unless you're an albino, you probably don't have a problem. I'd go for moderation. Get a light to medium tan, and then wear sunscreen to protect your skin. Tan just enough to maintain the color, and look young at 40.
Good luck!

I have noticed that the skin of old people is leathery where it has always been exposed to the sun, and places that were protected from the sun is still soft and healthy.
The sun is not good for one's skin lately because of all the problems , like the ozone layer that is partially depleted.
So, to tan in the sun cannot be healthy, and if this is our first consideration we should protect ourselves from too much exposure.
I am not too sure about tanning salons and our health.
It makes sense though to not expose the skin to unnescessary heat and other elements.
To most it looks good to be tanned though, in the short run...

Most people look better / healthier with a light tan, but I personally hate fake tan of any description. If you feel that being pale doesn't suit you, use blush.

it really depends on which shade.
if you have darker streaky blond hair, tan till youre bronzy
but if you have light fine pale blond hair, dont' tan too much.
your skin color should NEVER be darker than your hair color.
don't overdo it
however, fake tanning can be dangerous and have many long-term effects. they don't last for very long either, so be careful, and you should also be happy with your skincolor!! pale skin is beautiful in a different way, its WAY more elegant and classy than tanned skin, which conveys more athleticism....
**here in thailand, where every1 is naturally tanned, 90% ofthe commercias advertise creams and serums that make you pale, white, or pale pink-white, its funny how people always want what they can't get**
good luck! :)

i think people look good a little bit bronzed. some go way over the top and go really dark but i dont think it looks as nice as that pale golden colour you can get.
