Gmail uses non standard ports for POP3 and SMTP:
Server Information
Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.gmail.com port 995
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com port 465

What is the Gmail POP Troubleshooter?

there are two steps you have to follow, hence the two links. In the second one you'll have to choose which software you want to configure (Outlook, Eudora, Entourage, Thunderbird, you name it)
