I would suggest that you leave any NTUSER.DAT files alone. NTUSER.DAT files
are absolutely essential.

NTUSER.DAT files are the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive for the registry.

One NTUSER.DAT for each user on the machine, some templates and repair.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\NTUSER.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\repair
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile

If you want to optimize your registry, use NTREGOPT.

Direct download links (the zip files just need unzipping and dropping on the
drive. {Thank you, Jim}

I also don't liek the way this file showed up in an odd place and no you cannot open it in notepad, says file in use by registry. It also will not let me delete the files either.

I can only make an assumption/guess that this somehow is tied into the constant Windows 10 popups i get everyday.

I had a load of ntuser.dat files turn up in my Documents folder a few days ago for no obvious reason. To get rid of them I did a System Restore back to a few days earlier and the files have now gone with no apparent ill-effects to my PC

If someone is really afraid, you can always open Notepad and drag it into the notepad window (do NOT SAVE from notepad!!!!!!!!!!!)
It will probably not make a lot of sense but you can often get the gist of what the file contains

Somehow my ntuser.dat is in a folder I did not create under a modified version of a name that I did create, does anyone know why or how this would happen and how I could fix/and or rename it?

Sorry, I'm a little to curious to accept an answer like that. This little file just showed up on "my documents" one day. Registry keys don't just appear out of nowhere like that.

NTuser.dat is actually one of your Registry files. Unlike the other Registry files, this one is stored in your personal Documents and Settings folder and contains the entire contents of the HKEY_LOCAL_USER branch of the Registry.

You can’t delete it because it’s in use and protected, and you wouldn’t want to because otherwise you’ll mess up your whole computer! It will grow as you install more software that creates keys and sub keys in this branch of the Registry, and so is perfectly normal.

To summarise: leave NTUSER.DAT alone.
