Humans learn by exposure... meaning that when you go through an experience you build emotions, method of thinking and attitude based on that experience.....

.... books and stories expose you to situations that you can never be exposed to in reality or to situations where it would take you may be years to be exposed to if ever.....

.... the reading helps you learn how the characters of the story acted and reacted... the scope of exposure is very broad since you can learn about what all the characters did rather than just one of them.....

... the more you read, the more exposed you are and the more your mind is engaged into learning and new doors of thinking are opened to you.

Ok, think of it this way:
You read a James Bond novel. As you do so you learn procedures and cool gadgets of the spy business. And you get a different view of Cold War politics.
You would never be allowed access to the British Secret Service to learn these things first-hand.
