Sodium, like every reactive element, is never found free in nature. Sodium is a soft, bright, silvery metal which floats on water. Decomposition in water results in the evolution of hydrogen and the formation of the hydroxide. It may or may not ignite spontaneously on water, depending on the amount of oxide and metal exposed to the water. It normally does not ignite in air at temperatures below 115 C.

u know it takes a few seconds for the ignition ,& the resultant will be H2+NaOH
(where The hydrogen produced self-ignites...and burns with a bright flame
& NaOH DANGER! CORROSIVE. HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. CAUSES BURNS TO ANY AREA OF CONTACT.)
so i think u will have no time to put it in the freezer man ,so explosion occurs....BUT if all the steps was done in the freezer i think no reaction occurs.

& for ur safety guys who r interested in doing these experiment there is an Animation of Experiment (MPG Format, 172k)
u can watch it in this site without any loss or danger, here is the site

On adding sodium (Na)with water you will get a solution of sodium hydroxide and when you will freeze it then I dont know what would happen.
After all I have never tried it at home and at the school.

sodium plus water already gives you explosion...
maybe cool it down by putting into fridge?
