I am about to go to Abu Dhabi to undertake a contract for a few months and was wondering if anyone had some places of cultural interest which were not on the tourist routes. Any fishing? Anything which is non-touristy?

i lived in the abu dhabi for 10 years. unfortunatly it has got more and more touristy as time has gone on and is now a maze of shopping malls. They are following suit of dubai as the oil is only set to last another 80 years or so must now find other economic sources.

the deep sea Fishing is great, high chance you will see wild dolphins if you go out far enough as they always used to follow along side boats. make friends wiht people that have their own boat, lots of people go out on fridays.
abu dhabi means idle of dhabi (dhabi being a type of deer) don't get you hopes up i never saw one in ten years

there is a heavy drinking and socialising scene within the expat community but i would be wary of submerging youself in that scene too much these people are very detached from the REAL WORLD.

try to get up to sharjah or fujaria (i know that i have spelt that wrong) and go wadi bashing.

(wadi's are dried up river beds) the northen and mort rural emirates are the best places to go. the mountain scereny is quite stunning.

there is loads of golf is you like that kinda thing.

bewear of hookers too there are everywhere and will land you in jail. they operate a v harsh juscial system

the gold souk in dubai is a must just becasue it is amazing. the gold is the most amazing colour. also if it is still there the docks are good as you can watch old wooden boats beloaded up with everything from cows to tvs. close by is the dubai muesum and the spice market.

get an abra (water taxi) along the dubai creek ist how the locals travel

i hope this helps a bit it is a wonderful place i hope you enjoy it to its full potential. i love the uae hope you do to. don't worry about the language everyone speaks english

Help yourself. What do you want, you'll find it there. Now they have a music festival going on at the cultural foundation in Abu Dhabi. Try this:
