Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines
While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!
Some of the new up-and-comers include:
Powerset (www.powerset.com): A "natural language" search engine
Hakia (www.hakia.com): A "meaning-based" search engine
Wikia(www.wikia.com): A "community-based" search engine
ChaCha(www.chacha.com): A "social networking-based" search engine
Snap (www.snap.com): A search engine that offers visual previews
It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!

I could go on for hours, but, in a nutshell you have to learn how to optimize your site so that the major search engines can find it. Most of the biggies, Yahoo, Google, MSN, ect, don't allow you to just say here is my site, please list it. They use robots, or spiders, that search the web for new pages. It certainly does help to send them a notice that your site exists, but that at best will get you into a cue to be indexed or viewed by their robot. But even that does not guarantee you that your site will be included.
If the robot does not like the way your site looks or interacts, in other words, if it is not coded in the proper form, doesn't have all the things it should, metatags, proper form, ect, then it may refuse to index your pages, or maybe just one or two of them. And even when they do index your site it could take months for it to happen, and usually does.
So, you have to learn to optimize your site and that takes some research and maybe hiring someone to do it for you.
Then you have to look into advertising, yellow pages- internet yellow pages that is, but it can be pricey, maybe as much as $300 to $500 per month for the real pages, maybe $400 a year for lesser known imposter's, there is banner advertising, links from other pertinent sites, loads of sites that allow you to post ads and then pay a fee per click. You can also look into posting ads on things like craigs list or local bulletin boards that get listed on the web and can redirect shoppers to your site.
Anyway, you will have to do your homework, and probably spend a few bucks to do it right. And of course if you offer a local service you still have to do local advertising as well, flyers, newspapers, ect.
Best of luck

Make sure it is registered with the main search engines. promote it on relevant forums (that allow you to do so) and in blog comments if relevant. Hand out flyers if this is relevant to your business. Have something on it which makes people want to come back and revisit. Pay to advertise using something like google adsense

If you want to do exchange links, please contact me, my business site is www.expressimprints.com
Couple answers previous mine gave really good advices.
Have you reviewed your webiste code? All the tags need to be done right for spiders to add your site to search engines. Keywords on your site are very important fact also.
Best of luck to you!

Spam is the best way to get more "hits". To get more sales, well, that is something else entirely, but you didn't ask that.
