I am writing a report on how to improve communication with parents throughout the school year. How do we engage them and inform them of the choices their children make and face throughout their secondary education?
What do parents feel is important to them when schools communicate with them?
Who else should the school be communicating with?
What links should we encourage?
How can we support parents?
What are the student's needs in all this?
All information will be gratefully received

Caring parents will always be involved with their child's education. Unfortunately the caring parent is in a minority. The remainder just want their kids off their hands and they have little interest in their child's education. The only time the disinterested parent surface is when their offspring cause trouble and naturally they blame the school rather than their own parental ignorance.
If you want parental interest then find a 'good school' in which to teach. Otherwise start banging your head against the nearest wall because your wasting your effort!

I don't believe I finished.
Copy your graded homework, good or bad, share it. Introduce your friends physically or on the phone. Make your parents your friend at this stage in life. The most important thing a parent wants to know from school is the cirriculum or syllabus that their child is following. A parent loves to see if they can do the work too.
If you're away from home during school, sit down and edit envelopes that have art on the front of the envelope. The inside letter, all it has to say is "I Love You". The school should be communicating with anyone you ask them too. That's what they are paid to do from the government. What links? The same you use. If you're sharing your syllabus or cirriculum, they'll want to know what you're using. For pleasure, keep it neat and share it. If you have your own page, put your parents pic or quotes from childhood on there. That shows you appreciate your life and them as well. The student's needs in all of this is - sit and think critically about this-your needs are to know how to make good choices. Parents can help you w/advice, but counselors at school do too. Reach out to your teachers. I do. I go to college and I'm 50. I share a lot of things with them. Whatever is important to you will lead you in the correct direction and down an avenue of wealth!
Good Luck!

It's not just the parent's schools should communicating with, but older siblings, aunts, uncles and grandparents. As other family members often spend as much time with the students, especially if the parents work.

Copies of the homework/coursework sheets should be sent directly to the family, as well as the student, so they know what is going on.

the problem is caring
if the parents care it is easy to involve them
if they don't and they are the ones producing the wonderful kids
then the job is trying to get them to care
good luck
