I'm about to get one from my credit union and last year they have me a list with about 50 ideas on it, mostly including documents. I have since lost the list and when I make a deposit, I want to go over all the possibilites I can

Car titles, Certificates of deposit, bonds, rare coins, love letters, jewelry, wills, pictures that cannot be replaced. any extra money you have (though it won't be drawing interest in there. Insurance policies, life, property, auto.

Anything you want to put in it, as long as it will fit. A safe deposit box is for anything you consider valuable; whether or not it will be important to anybody else isn't important. Many people put gems, coin or stamp collections, insurance papers, deeds to homes or vehicles, insurance documents, etc. One good thing to put in there is a video of your belongings in your home, so that if you have any sort of disaster, there is a visual record of what you own. It's also a good place for heirlooms and irreplacable family photos, birth certificates, passports when not in use, and similar items.

Anything that you can do without after bank hours and on weekends. Also anything that you can do without in the event that a co-signer of the box should die. Banks are funny about access after hours and in any event where they might be sued because you took something that belonged to someone else. All of which may be a good argument for having a small home safe.
