and you saw our black maid scrubbing the kitchenfloor on her hands and knees, what comes to your mind first?

Yes, we do pay fair wages since the 90's. And she does not know how to handle a mop, we bought her one and showed her how to do it but she likes it the way it is. My sister in law who arrived freshly from Holland was disgusted and didn't speak to me for weeks. Now she understands how it works though!

I would say that those that condemn do not understand that you employ someone who is less fortunate than you, and by employing her you give her and her family a chance.
There's nothing wrong with this.

Not speaking colour but the fact is she was hired as a maid, then it would not bother me as she continued her job.
But if kept against her own free will, abused in any sense of the word, I then would be in disgust.
Would politely observe first then, secondly take action if this was the case.
Then again I have not had the resources to ever travel other parts of the world, so really can't say if this is a racial question or just a part of everyday life.
(To see anyone on hands & knees scrubbing the floor, never a lone a Afro americian person).
I too scrubb my floors on hands & knees.

I am white and would rather clean the floor on my hands and knees becuase it will actually be clean afterwards. These mops are all rubbish and for lazy people. Maids in SA get better paid than secretaries (fact). They don't pay taxes, get a free place to live and free food at work - our maid cleared R500 more than me in a month and she worked a 3 hour day!!

It depends on how the maid was treated, I do not like to jump to conclusions till I know the circumstances. If she is paid a fair days wage and treated with respect and dignity there is not a problem, but if she is struggling to survive on minimum wages and treated like crap, I would probably leave and not visit you again. The reason being that there is a very simple principle at work here, of course you would be nice to me as a guest, because you are trying to impress me, but it is how you treat people you are not trying to impress that shows your true colors .i.e. if you took me out for dinner and were nice to me , but rude to the waiter, then put simply, you are a rude person, regardless of how nice you were to me, because it would all be false pretense.

It wouldn't bother me. I would see the same image in the UK. Black people usually do the cleaning in hospitals and public buildings. Since they are not a slave, it is called having a job. Don't feel guilty if you pay them properly and treat them right.

Why would she be on her hands on knees, when she could just use a mop??

Are you paying her enough, she is equal to a white woman doing the same job so are you paying the same?
