Does anyone have any ideas. It came on very suddenly, and as it is a youngster I'm not sure what could have caused it.

It sounds like your little one has Cataracts, which means the little one could have inherited the cataracts, caused by disease, age or even diabetes. All of these are normal possibilities in a Guinea Pig. It is most likely diabetes as it came on very suddenly, so you'll need to take the little one down to the vet and get him/her checked out for diabetes and the other possibilities for the cataracts. If you notice that the little one is drinking lots of water, is peeing a lot and is pretty skinning. Then those are the signs of diabetes. Only way to be sure though is to take him/her down to a specialized small animals vet so that he/she can be treated by someone who knows Guinea Pigs...otherwise you won't get it treat right and most likely get a wrong diagnosis.

I had a Guinea Pig named Buttons who had diabetes and developed cataracts do to the diabetes. She lived a normal healthy life though. She was a sweetie and one of my rescued Guinea Pigs, so her age was unknown but she live for 3 years after I found out she had diabetes, be for that I had her for about 2 years. So she lived good long life and a happy one. It just takes special care and love to handle and own a Guinea Pig with diabetes.

Get the little on down to a good small animal vet as soon as you can and get him/her checked out.

Good Luck.

My vet tells me guinea pigs get a blindness where their eyes are cloudy, I can't remember what you call it. I have a blind guinea pig that I got when he was about 6 weeks old. His eyes just had a little white spot on each one. He is nearly 3 now and his eyes are almost completely white but he doesnt seem to be affected by them. He is very happy and squeaks a lot and is addic`ted to lettuce. His name is Stevie :-)

It's probably scratched it. You need to get it checked out at the vets and they will give you some antiseptic or something to keep it from getting infected. My guinea pig had this and we didn't catch it in time so it had to have it's eye removed.

some guinea pigs are very prone to getting catercats (sorry about the spelling), but best to take it to the vets, with eyes it is best to get it checked out sooner rather that later.

It may well go blind, but don't worry as they adapt very easily, i have had 3 completely blind ones and they all acted perfectly normally.

If my pugs have cloudy eyes it means that their eye has been scratched or damaged.

I have to make sure that the eye doesn't dry out otherwise an ulcer will appear.

I understand that these are different animals but the anatomy of the eye would be the same.

Your giunea pig has probably gone blind in that eye. It could have been scratched by the beding (if it is hay or straw.) or if you have another giunea pig then it could have scratched his eye. Don't worry your giunea pig will be fine, its still got one eye left!
