Given by how obvious people feel about this free form of great therapy in getting rid of thier frustrations by asking and answering questions here in yahoo Q&A, should pyschiatrists and pyschologists start to worry about a loss of future income?

Isn't CBT in its basic form a writing exercise of what p-d you off in the negative column(ie the question) then the turn around in what you could have chosen to think about to cheer you up in the positive column (ie the answer), and the BEST bit.. the end of session (I presume) encouragement comment (ie Recieiving the Best answer to a question you have answered)?

Start downsizing guys... lol

~What's ironic is that you are the one asking the question in this situation... lol
As for the first answer, there aren't enough Psychiatrists and Counselors available. There are a lot of people who are depressed, suicidal or suffering from PTSD, like the war, etc. I suppose these people shouldn't be helped?
Sure, I bet there are a few bad counselors out there, but you shouldn't generalize so much about something you know very little about.

I don't think they should necessarily be worried about open forums such as this springing up. Rather, they should worry about the shoddy quality of the wares they peddle. I've been to nearly a score of different "mental health care professionals" in the past five years. As a result I have taken to collecting diagnoses. I currently have fourteen. All different. Nineteen people, fourteen different opinions.

If the psychological/psychiatric community cannot agree amongst themselves with any greater degree of precision than that, they should definitely be worried. Very worried indeed!

And in the meantime, while they're trying to get their act together and "perfect their science and art", they shouldn't be taking the money of the people they practice upon!

And that's my pronouncement on that subject.

Yes, this is a great form of therapy if yahoo doesn't TOS us. Shrinks have nothing to fear. I'm bipolar and there are meds I have to take and the therapist helps me with my mood swings or I'll have a completely different answer tomorrow.

not really, as long as our society is getting more sophisticated and educated we need more and more psychology and people trained psychiatrist.

the science of psychology is only in its infant stage. Freud developed his art only a few years ago compared to the other sciences. Give this science/Art a few More centuries to adapt.

The best thing in the world for psychology would be if there were suddenly a LOT fewer positions for therapists. We have FAR too many of them, most doing very little for anyone, some actively harming clients.
