The more proper name of lady bugs are lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). So males or females are lady beetles.

Actually, the name does not refer to the sex of the insect but stems from the story about a town whose crops were being devastated by insect pests. After a lot of praying there appeared a swarm of Ladybugs that took care of the problem. They were then referred to as the 'Beetles of Our Lady' which over time became the modern form.
