It seems to me that the repuglicans are that way, they would rather spend 10 billion a month to fight a war then to help victims of Katrina. They should be ashamed but are not.

I think for some, the perception is that, in many in other countries, the poor don't have the opportunities that the poor in America have.
In America, the poor often have help from the government, while in other countries, the government is either unwilling or unable to do anything.
Also, how about living conditions? The problems I see the poor suffering in places like Africa seem worse than the typical homeless person I see in my town.
I could be wrong, as I have never visited or lived abroad. But I'm sure there are many who have this perception.

Wealthy countries derive a benefit by giving to poor countries. The good will is like money in the bank. There is a perception in the United States that our country is a great benefactor throughout the world. This is not really accurate. The US spends a relatively small percentage of our GDP on foreign aid. For that matter, we spend a relatively small percentage on social welfare programs compared to other developed countries. It is true that domestic spending on anti-poverty programs has declined over the last forty years, but this money is not going to foreign aid. It is going to tax cuts, paying interest on the national debt, and the military. Why aren't we busting our asses to help Americans? Well, we are busting our asses to give giant tax breaks to companies who export American jobs and loot our natural resources. The answer: get educated, get involved, take responsibility and you can make a difference.

The U.S. is the police for the entire world. The govornment and the media know how to help everyone except their own. We don't matter. People that live here now about the hungry and the homeless here, but we don't in Africa and all the other countries. So, the media and govornment needs to tell us and then we have to give into social pressure and give. The govornment and media feel that the salvation army can always help us.

Because of social pressure. If the U.S. doesn't help a certain country then other countries will look at us and wonder why we didn't send them any aid when we have all the money in the world. Plus, it makes people feel good to say that they helped someone in Africa or some foreign place.

The Bush Administration would rather spend billions in a losing effort, than apologize to the American people, and exert damage control measures.
In response, the people voiced their opinion by voting; giving the Democrats the majority in both houses.
Hopefully the executive branch will get the message that Congress and the people do not support their agenda, and agree to divert more tax payer dollars to internally helping our country, as opposed to attempting to rebuild other countries, in apparent futility.

wow that was mean....well to answer your question, I think its the guilt. Sometimes when I see a homeless person...I want to give them something because I actually have stuff to give. Its not like I'm force to give it to them because I'm not. Its just sad that there are homeless people. So many abandon houses and jobs they could have. I don't understand homeless people. Why do you just live outside when you could clean yourself up with the money you get and get a job instead of buying drugs. There are sometimes when I don't feel like giving homeless people money because I don't actually know if there homeless or not. Saw this "homeless" guy get in a lexus one day....A LEXUS...pissed me off so bad

Its just smoke and mirrors, since they have never really helped anyone. Waging war and killing over 650,000 plus Iraqis without rebuilding their Country certainly isn't helping them. They are now involved in a Civil War to take things in their own hands. Bush put his puppet in charge over there so he can remove the oil resources from their Country. This takes priority over helping desolate peoples when your a Republican. You have to wait and watch, and the longer you do, you will see they have just exploited everyone with lies.

I agree with you one thousand percent! I have been saying this for years, but this is the way America is structured and we feel obligated to take care of the entire world. I wouldn't mind helping others outside of America as long as we took care of our own first.
