Yes. They are considered garden pests and they also attract snakes, skunks, and other creatures. There are areas in the world that have had grasshopper plagues which destroyed thousands and thousands of acres of crops. I think Australia had a really bad plague. I don't remember the details.

Haven't you ever heard of the Mormons of Salt Lake City Utah and the Locusts there? When the Lo casts invaded the fields and threatened their crops, they prayed and Seagulls were sent to eat the pesky grasshoppers and saved their crops.

yes, they are more fierce than catepillars when they are a big group, the areas they had passed by left nothing.
as they eat all the crops,people have nothing to eat so they catch and fry them, it is said that they are very delicious.
