People have freedom in every country. It also has limits in every country. Here in the United States, we have allowed political correctness to interfere with our freedom of speech. One can be jailed just for making discriminatory statements.
Even Soviet Russia and communist China, beliefs could not be truly suppressed. So, at least, one had freedom of thought - if one kept silent.

those kind of remarks are not the best example but yes. What about questioning things, so many things are just not allowed to be questioned, like the education system, it's seriously screwed up in this country. We want to force people to stay in school, when i say, if you really don't want to be there, don't go and stop wasting all the people who do want to be there's time. But no one will ever let you say that will they, cos the government knows best

There is no true freedom of speech. Slander is illegal, as is yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater. Talking about the overthrow of government could be considered treason. Then you have the politically correct issues. Personally, I don't mind having a discussion about issues of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or what have you. I do object to someone throwing around epithets without really discussing them in a rational manner. If you think, for example, that homosexuals deserve to die (which I don't), I'm never offended by someone explaining to me their views calmly and trying to persuade me to change my mind. However, many people neither want to talk rationally or discuss anything, and just want to yell at people who don't believe what they believe. And yelling "die (insert epithet here)" is insulting, demeaning, and, overall, boring.

Okay let's get some things straight. Yeah you're free to say it but just because you're allowed to say whatever nonsense is on your mind doesn't mean that I have to like it. That wasn't a requirement in the free speech law. It didn't say that you have the freedom to say whatever the hell you want AND whoever you're saying it to HAS to like it. Sorry doesn't work that way.

It's ALL freedom of speech. I have the freedom to express my opinion and you have the freedom to express your disagreement with my opinion.

That's NOT being silenced.

Being silenced means being put in prison for expressing your opinion.

So, no. No contradiction.

Somewhat, yes. Freedom of speech works two ways: I get to say something racist, then you get to say something about what I said.
