They will peck on any surface as long as there is something there for them to eat. After all that is why they are pecking at the ground! :-)

We have a one legged chicken (long story, don't ask) that is like a pet as the other chooks pick on it if it is put in the yard. Anyhow, it comes to the full height windows at the back of the house and pecks on the windows. I am not sure whether it can see anything to peck at on the windows or it has worked out a scam whereby when it annoys us inside with its infernal tapping, we go out and give it a hand full of parrot feed which keeps it distracted for a while. The others get anything that is leftover from meals. Spaghetti, watermelon, apples, bread, banana, meat scraps, etc, and even peck at mosses growing along the brick paving.

Chickens peck the ground for food, insects, ground corn and stuff, they also peck the ground for rocks to put in their gizzards, because they have no teeth they need to find some way to make their food more easily digetible. The gizzard keeps the rocks and grinds the food with it. Eventually the bird needs a new rock.

Chickens peck everything - that is how they interact with their environment. They will peck bugs, grass, your toes, a fishing lure, a coin, a dog's nose, a shiny spot on teh sidewalk - they peck everything.
