I really want to get a few, meaningful tattoos, atleast meaningful to myself. However, someone told me today that I will never get a serious job offer as a surgeon, and will never be trusted or taken seriously by my patients if I have tattoos. Is this true? Should I not get the tattoos.

As long as it doesn't say "I carve my initials in your body while you sleep", I'll be fine with it. You aren't going with a Mike Tyson type tat, are you?

It definitely depends on the location of your tats, what they say or represent and especially where you apply for a job. Most Dr's cover their arms and most of their bodies both in the office and in the operating room.

You should ask the Chief of Surgeons at your hospital.

Generally, I would say it doesn't affect your ability to get a job. If you want them, go for it. As long as it's not a swastika on your forehead, your ok.

The people who don't like it won't see it. The ones who say you have body image problems are speculating and talking out their anuses. Pay no mind to the mindless.

Really though, go get some counseling from a professional. It doesn't mean you're crazy or insane but asking Yahoo! for advice about becoming a surgeon does hint at that.

If they mean something to you, it really doesn't matter what other people think. No matter what you do there will always be people to question your decisions and actions. Stall tall. Be strong.

Peace.

You should not get a tattoo that is not easily hidden under clothing. Tattoos are something that should be appreciated. However, not everyone is inclined to believe that. Nor are they inclined to believe that a person who would get a tattoo should be appreciated. This is not to say it's true. Personally, a person who chooses to get a tattoo has a real grasp on what they want. They know that they will be marking their body for the rest of their lives and they are prepared to take that step. To me, that inspires trust. But, most people see them as less than respectable. Feel free to get a tattoo(s) just put it/them in a place that is concealable to people other than who you would trust to see it and be open minded. As a surgeon, there are many places on your body (back, upper arm, femur., ankle, foot, torso, etc) that would be perfectly acceptable for a tattoo, (please note that if you choose to place a tattoo in areas other than these that is completely acceptable and your option. I am just describing what would be best for furthering your career.)

I have to agree with the others that as long as the tattoos are where you can't see them it should be okay. Some people seem to think badly of a person that has a tattoo. I however think that they are okay. Just remember when getting a tattoo where it will be and can it be covered up by clothing.

Just DO NOT shave your head first.
As far as the tattoo.... A lot of people might have issues with it. A lot would not think twice about it and could care less. Older generations would be the ones to turn their nose up at it.

Put them somewhere no one will see? Keep them off your hands and arms.

HMMMM.... I've had some surgeries and my primary concern at the time was for my safety.........not so much whether the surgeon had tattoos. If you're concerned why don't you just get them in discreet places. You don't have to have them on your knuckles right? There are many places that will be covered by scrubs.

It depends on the tattoo. If you get a big old Snoopy on your forehead, you probably won't be taken seriously. If you get a Celtic symbol or other small on your wrist, it's probably OK. As time goes on these things become more normal, just like long hair did.

u can have a tattoo if u want but make sure it's in a place where people cannot see it. if u want to become a surgeon and u show ur tattoo, then it's unprofessional and ur patients will see u differently. i would want my doctor to be prim and proper, not bearing tattoos. u can have one on ur back or shoulder where ur patients would not be able to see it.

Have you just thought about opening your own practice, and when you do have your own business, you can have what you want on your body, as long as you don't look like no biker chick in the surgery room..lol..anyhow, your a person too, and if that is something you want to do, do it, before your skin wrinkles up, and then you will look ridiculous with one one. Cause it ain't the same when you have one when your younger. Old timers..well that was then with them. With you, this is now. Its up to you.

I personally love tatoos.. but yes.. they can interfere with professional jobs. I personally woudln't care if you were my surgeon unless they were skulls with joints hanging out of thier mouths.... then I might not have a good impression of your abiltiy to stay clean for my surgery.. but i wouldn't mind peronsally. I work in a hospital and alot of peopel get tatoos that are covered by their work clothes

I don't personally care for tattoos, but if you want to get some, I'd just make sure it was somewhere that is not obvious to the general public.
