A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who focuses on the mind. They have an M.D. degree and they are allowed to write prescriptions. They may also treat with talk therapy, if they choose, but people usually don't get talk therapy from a psychiatrist because they are so expensive.

A psychologist usually has a Ph.D. in psychology and they usually treat with talk therapy only. They are not allowed to write prescriptions because they don't have medical degrees.

From what i know psychiatrists and psychologists differ in that psychiatrists can give prescription to medications and psychologists cannot. But in terms of basic function they are not different.

Psychiatrists are MD's with a license to dispense drugs to correct whatever the problem is. Psychologists are the ones you talk to while you are on the drugs to try to resolve the problems that made you have to take the drugs in the first place. Very different. Good question!!!
