If you're question is how much money do I need to have in order to trade stocks the answer is probably about a thousand dollars. If you have an online account its going to cost you about 7 dollars a trade.(scottrade) 1000 dollars should be enough for you to make some trades while not being hurt to badly with commission. People might say less but to feel comfortable its $1000 minimum.

On line brokers do not seek Penny Stock traders. There's no advantage to them. The accounts, generally, have a low life cycle. The average Penny Stock traders doesn't read any books on the subject and act more like a gambler than either a trader or investor. You got to ask yourself why would a beginner pick the hardest route to make money. It simply makes no sense. It's almost like they think having more shares is an advantage. Crazy... huh?

Open a TRADING/DEMAT account first with a bank/agency offering the services. Learn how to use the service providers website for online purchase and sale of shares on the exchange - not at all difficult. Usually a demo page is available. You are allowed to purchase even a single share of most companies. So, I don't think you need to start with more than the cost of one share.

It all depends on your investment potential and your risk potential. If you are ready to lose 50% of your investment, then that decides your investment plan. There are many sites where you can read about expert investor's advice to new investors.
