"being on the rag" means that the girl has her period. it comes from the time way before sanitary napkins were manufactured. women would use rags made from sheets as menstrual pads. they had to wash them to use the next month. in the old days, women who were having their periods often were not allowed out of the house. they were conveniently "indisposed." i think, based on the horrid cramps that we get, that we should do that now, we should lie on sofas, indisposed. but, just to let you know:

when you marry, have sex with your wife when she is on the rag and daily just before it. it does wonders to alleviate those terrible cramps!

Well it is a crude way to say she has her period, not is in periods, and the rag today really is a sanitary napkin. Back, way back in the day, rags were used until sanitary napkins were invented. Later, the term "being on the rag" was used instead of saying she is menstruating. Kapish?

Yup, Back in the day women used rags because there were no tampons or sanitary napkins

Yes..it does mean that but mature people don't say that anymore. Ages ago, before there were feminine products sold in stores, women used "rags" during their period.

Back in the day, women used to use rags instead of pads, tampons, etc. to remain sanitary.

Way back when there were no tampons or pads, women used household rags to absorb the period stuff (blood). So nasty but true.

It means that she is on her period not on the rag, that sounds so sickening.
