depends on how you define "first" and "man" I think the first man was the first hominid that could communicate well enough to be named "Adam" and also reason well enough to not only protect himself from the environment but begin to exploit and manipulate it... build fire, agriculture, etc. And I'm sure it was touch and go for at least a million years. Maybe at the beginning of those million years there were hominids that could communicate and reason in a very rudimentary fashion, not yet able to build a sustainable fire, or grow food... maybe there were one or two "mutants" among varying tribes... but they were likely outcast and didn't survive... a million years later there were more of them and they had segregated themselves from the others, formed their own tribes and were happy to be amongst others who could build fires and grow grains so that fewer of them died during the winters. and voila... another half a million years later, here we are, with fewer neanderthals to compete with and chimpanzees being our closest distinctly separate relative. see Clan of the Cavebear, or the quest for fire. and be kind to the mutants... and "weird" people.
