Everyone here has given you basically the same message- listen to yourself! This is good because, not only do you start to hear where and why things are right ( or wrong), you also start to put the idea into motion" oh, when it feels right, then it sounds right".
This is the most basic idea about singing that we can learn. Since our bodies are the instrument, it is absolutely important that we figure out what to look/listen/feel for, and sort out what's what. The next stage goes more critical: what feels comfortable or known isn't necessarily right. ( like, eating too many sweets when you're blue is comfortable, but that isn't right, either.)
This is where a teacher helps, because, he/she can tell you straight away ( if they're any good) what produces the better sound. ( when we hear ourselves live- not recorded- it sounds much different than what the voice actually sounds like to the outside world. We have to stop listening to that inside voice until we can put two and two together through the actual physical sensation route)
Okay, enough theory, down to practicalities.
Don't EVER try and push your voice out to make it sound louder. All you're doing there is hurting the delicate mechanism in your throat. If you need to make more sound, use the muscles you use when you have a good laugh, all around your middle, front and back, to give you the energy you need.
Do try and cultivate the feeling that you can send your voice out like a sigh, that your throat stays as open and relaxed during singing as it does when sighing. Do let your lower jaw hang a little looser than normal everyday tension and stress allows. If you find yourself clenching your molars together, let go. That won't help the voice, it only acts as a barrier.
Use a "light touch" at first- don't go for the big heavy stuff until you build up endurance. If you ever feel hoarse, stop! Your body doesn't use pain signals for nothing!
Best wishes, and keep on singing!
( Oh yes, do find a good teacher)
I've been singing professionally for over 30 years, and I'm not outta juice yet! It's worth it to treat your voice right.

I recall listening to a radio interview Rod Stewart did, where he admitted at the time, he KNEW he couldn't sing. I was impressed with his admission, seeing he was the hottest male sex symbol rock star of the mid 70s.
His secret? He LOVED TO SING--and that passion comes out so clear to the audience, that they care less of his vocal range--and appreciate his love, his happiness shown while performing.
And I think that IS so true: doesn't matter if you perfectly hit the notes, just matters in how much you LOVE to sing for people.
You see: American Idol as it all wrong, not surprising.......

I come from a country where people love singing so much, shooting people due to their bad karaoke singing has happened many times. I speak from experience and observation that practice makes perfect.

Yeah, karaoke would be a good suggestion, but basically you have to practice... Maybe you should listen to "good" music, where the singer's voice is one that you admire or like.

There are Nintendo games that will let you know if you are high or low and how many notes you hit right on.
