Is it because people got a clue that it's just not appropriate or has it actually been outlawed in most areas?

Profanity is always a disorderly conduct and not an exercise of freedom of speech because it is offensive to most people. When an act is not liked by many it is not an enjoyment of the freedom but already an abuse. Thus, it constitute as a violation of the constitution.
