If you have proof do so and ask for a written apologies to clear your name if you think you are right.
If you do not have proof but assumtions, then its best to move on and let your employer show how stupid they are. People who do those kind of things play dirty games to get somewhere up high.
When they climb that way, they often fall and break their neck.
Be who you are and give your best to your next employer. May be they respect you and your values.

If you don't confront them it will never end, and your character and reputation may suffer from it.
If you confront them and it continues, get a lawyer, slander and libel are civil offenses.

Better talk to this person in private so you can both air your sides. lf it continues, ignore.
lf it's too damaging and the ex-employer won't shut up, get a lawyer.

I say that confrontation is a very hard thing to do, but once you do it in a preofessional way then I think will you feel better about yourslef. You owe it to yourself to feel better.
