Don't forget the Ponting factor. He has been absent in all but one of their recent run of losses. For teams to beat Australia, they need to get Ponting, Gilchrist and Hussey cheaply, simple. If not, you are chasing 300+ everytime. SA and NZ have pulled it off with awesome efforts, but would you choose to have to EVERY time??
Whilst their form has dipped, they have had a long challanging season. I would say, that there is about 4 or 5 teams which have a realistic chance. Aus, WI, Sri Lanka, SA, and maybe NZ. Despite the enthusiasm of their supporters, I don't think India will even make the semi's, because of how miserably they did in the carribbean last time they were there. The conditions just don't suit their style.
As for Australia, they haven't looked as dominant in the last month as they usually are, but bet on them at least making the semi's. They are still pretty much the best side in the world.

It's basically a choice between a) Australia and b) someone else, I'd say the Aussies are about even money. SA have been #2 for a while now, WI should do well at home but Gayle is not firing and he's a key player. India seem to be coming into form at the right time but their fielding is poor. Pakistan could beat Australia but lose to Holland, they don't have the consistency to win but could surprise. NZ have the firepower in Oram and McCullum but not a consistent runscorer at the top, SL rely too much on an aging Murali/Vaas/Jayasuriya. And England? Doing better today, but on last 18 months' form will do well to reach the Super 8s!

Since cricket is a game of uncertainties as has been proved on number of occasions, nothing can be predicted for sure about the outcome of a tournament well in advance.
As it stands now all the top 8 teams stand a chance to win the world. Te final outcome will purely depend upon the performance of teams during the world cup. Whichevr team perform to their potential consistently durign the world cup will be the ultimate winners.

i love how arrogant the indians are, "they wont win cause they dont have ganguly" struth, hes crap!! basically it will be either sa, australia or new zealand. Ill tell you why, sa are playing great, australia will bounce back because they are the best team in the world, (the rankings are flawed, sa didnt take the ranking, they inherited it from england and new zealand playing out of their skins against a side missing half its best lineup) and new zealand are playing awesomely at the moment, on their day new zealand are unbeatable. also with australia, i beleive it will be a new zealand australia final. sa will get beaten by the aussies in the semi because sa are mentally weak against the aussies. If their bowlers step up and improve - yes. Otherwise - not sure. They need to improve their bowling big time from NZ if they are to have a realistic chance.
They still have a chance - tournaments like the World Cup can throw up many situations - look at the semi finals in 2003 (Kenya). If they can peak at thr right time, anything is possible, but at this point it is hard to look past South Africa.
We will find out in April I guess!!!
