If you want something decent and fairly close to the city, I think the minimum you'd pay in Melbourne is about $1400 per month.
You could probably get something for $1000 per month, but it will be a little further out from the CBD
www.realestate.com.au
can help with finding places.
Here's a map so you can tell where you want to search:
http://www.dha.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/2322/Melbourne_map.pdf
As a guide, Frankston to the CBD or Lara to the CBD is around 50min in the car (on the freeway).
Camberwell to the CBD is about 15-20min in the car

Like the previous answers, it depends on the suburb.
I live in Melbourne about 35-40 minutes out of the CBD by train but probably only 20 minutes if that by car and rent is about $1040 for a 3 double bedroom, all built in robes, one bathroom.
I would recommend checking out www.realestate.com.au
They are the best site to look at for places and after I bit of searching you will be able to work out what the averages are in different suburbs.
There is also a room mates finder as well. Which I have also found came in handy a couple of times.
The maps are handy too, so you can check if the places are close to train lines or freeways for example.
Hope that helps, good luck and have a great time!

I say Melbourne :) The culture hub of Australia! Think food, art and fashion. A lot of intersting people to meet here, from all walks of life! Also, in my personal opinion (I'm from Melb., and don't mean to be bias) but I feel that the people in Melbourne are a bit friendlier than the people in Sydney (who are still friendly though!), and are less 'yuppie'- more down to earth :)

It depends very much on which suburb you choose. Check the classified ads on Saturday in the Sydney Morning Herald http://www.smh.com.au and The Age in Melbourne http://www.theage.com.au

It depends how close you are to the central business district.
Sydney can vary from 200 (way out west) to 2000 per week, depending upon location and quality.
