I used skoal on a regular basis for about the same amount of time. I used a least a can a day. I began chewing to help me stop smoking, and it did help. I successfully stop smoking over six years ago. I knew I would probably get hooked on the skoal but I figured the skoal would be easier to quit once I got over the smoking, and it was (but not by much.) So this is how it was for me; I loved chewing and still do (love it that is) but today and for the past three years I have been tobacco free. I was concerned about getting cancer in my lip. It (my lip) was very callused and raw. It also got in the way an awful lot, playing softball I was always spitting all over the in field. Which other players didn't care for very much but, I needed my nicotine fix. Anyway it was a big hassle and a nasty habit and it was tearing my lip up. Not to mention the waisted money. The fact is, no matter what you do it is going to be difficult to quit. You'll just have to face-up-to-it and go through the pain of quiting. You can do it, I think it's a matter of wanting to badly enough. Once you get through the pains of it you'll be very , very glad you did. Just one more thing, I would really like to take a chew today but, I know that I can't touch the stuff.

My father dipped for 20 years as a miner. When it finally rotted his jaw out and led to mass amounts of dental work, he decided to quit. He did it cold turkey. The physical addiction to the nicotine usually leaves after 4 or 5 days, but the oral fixation is the hardest to get rid of. You are so used to the routine of putting a dip in, its hard to shake it. I've heard of sunflower seeds or beef jerkey to replace it, but for my pops it was (no kidding): Jolly Ranchers. That damn cherry smell still pisses me off evey time I smell it. He'd go through a bag a day and the clacking sound of him moving it around in his mouth and hitting his teeth was annoying, but after about 2 months, he was fine. You just have to have the will power and the realization that the longer you do this, the closer you get to severe damage to your mouth or worse.
