I'm an ESL/TESL teacher. The best way to teach idioms is to teach them in their entirety because if you translate them word for word they do not make sense. Idioms are culturally generated sayings so if people from another culture do not understand the background of the culture they will have problems understanding them. Another problem is that some idioms are historical, from a long time ago and out of context with the present. So look for a well illustrated/funny book on idioms so the students will get the point through pictures. Remember that you have to teach the general idea not the details in an idiom. Browse a little on Amazon, or Barnes & Noble under ESL. Good Luck
