The majority of the answers above are wrong. Condoms are not 100% effective, they reduce the risk but as hard as it may seem, liquids can still transfer from the outside and inside including sperm.

Use of a condom will provide you with over 95% protection against catching or transmitting a STD or getting pregnant.
However, condoms do fail occasionally and their are other ways to get STDs. They are rare, but if a woman gives oral sex to a man and has a cut in her mouth then she can catch a STD that way. The same is true for the reverse, when a man has oral sex with a woman.
The only other way to get an STD would be in the case of Syphilis, which can be communicated via a toilet seat, if the disease is in its final stages. But, most people detect the disease long before that stage comes about, and for those who don't then society detects their insanity before they become infectious. Now this could be a problem if you live in Outer Borneo, but not if you live in a civilized nation.
In short the only way you can get a STD is to have contact with an infected person's sexual fluids or organs. A condom is usually more than enough to prevent this. The best way though is to find a regular partner, have yourselves both tested and have a sexual relationship with only each other.

The risk is reduced as long as the condom doesn't break, but there is still a risk.

if you use it properly and it fits well, it should keep you from getting aids or stds as long as you dont do oral sex either.
