Actually the technical definition is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result". I think it is more a matter of perspective. Do you think most so called "crazy people" think they are crazy. Our society is so obsessed with fitting in, with a closed view of what acceptable behavior is. Insanity is a concept created by people to justify their actions over someone who's actions they can't understand. If someone acts out of the norm and does not feel the need to explain why, they are defined as insane. I try to be more open minded than that. How do I know that the woman on the corner who wears tin foil on her head because she thinks there are radio waves effecting her brain doesn't have some sort of basis for her belief? There are far more obscure behaviors involved in some organized religions.

in my opinion insanity is when your mind looses total controll and starts doing things on its own. it dosent mean that it will do just bad things just things that are not normal
