The Two Treatises of Government was the basis for the American Decalration of Independence and a ton of enlightenment era thinking. Our founding documents are in one way or another based on his idea of popular sovereignty, meaning that the ruled are only such because they allow it. We agree to be governed for the good of society, but if we see our rulers get out of line, we have the right and duty to topple that gov't and rebuild it in a way which serves our purposes. Ultimate individual freedom. The man was a genius.

Hi there, John Locke (1632 - 1704) was a large influence on philosophy. It is rather difficult to explain his ideas in a simplistic form, but I will try...as follows:
Locke stated that the object of understanding is described as ideas. These ideas are in the mind and come from a variety of human experience. We perceive, remember and combine these ideas from our own unique deliberations, desires and wills, from these experiences we form new ideas; therefore, experience can be two fold.
I hope this helps. :o)
