hi i am a hairdresser of 9 years. i have advised clients to stay away for there first trimester. but in relation to after your first trimester i have found no problems where reported back to me after any chemical service i probably would more suggest semi-perminant as they don't contain ammonia and if so only a small amount. but remember hormones can play usual tricks on hair i had one lady who hair was coloured dark red and had faded out within 1 week her hair was normally fade resistant. its hard to tell what colours would be longer wearing as it depends on the colour contents make and ammonia levels. make sure you treat your hair for one week prior to colouring to close or to pack any damage cuticles that may be on the hair shaft have a good cut first if deciding to colour at home and to monitor the time allowed for on scalp applications. if going lighter i would suggest a salon do it as sometimes on scalp colouring can cause an irritation due to sensitivity.

I started dying my hair when I was 13, so when I found out I was pregnant last year, I freaked out because I'd already dyed my hair twice. I'd heard that you weren't supposed to dye your hair, and I thought I'd destroyed my baby's brain or something. After doing a little research and talking to some doctors, I found that my worries were unfounded. Research has proven that there is no harm done to baby. But to be safe, so your girlfriend doesn't lose any brain cells, just have her dye her hair in a well ventilated area- at least turn the bathroom fan on!

I am currently 18 weeks pregnant....& I have always dyed my hair before pregnancy. I have asked 2 of the 4 doctors at my OB's of it's safe to dye my hair during pregnancy. They both said that while there are no conclusive tests (because what pregnant woman wants to volunteer for a test like that), that prove either way what hair dye does to the baby....it's best NOT to dye your hair. If you MUST....wait until later in the pregnancy when there are less chances of problems w/ fetal development.

Is it safe to dye my hair while pregnant?
There are conflicting reports about the safety of hair dye during pregnancy: Several studies found no ill effects on pregnant rodents given 100 times the typical human dose of these products, whereas British researchers reported chromosome damage among women who dyed their hair. Although this study was not conducted on pregnant women, this finding suggests that there may be some risk to coloring your hair while pregnant.

As a precaution, some physicians advise you to avoid hair color until after your first trimester (the period when your baby's vital organs, head, body and limbs form). Colorants made from vegetable dyes such as henna are preferable to the chemical dyes used in permanent and semi-permanent formulas. Recent studies indicate that hair dyes contain relatively high levels of bio-available lead acetate that can be harmful to the fetus, particularly the nervous system and brain. Check the product label and avoid lead based hair products.

The general rule is to not color your hair during the first and the end of the last trimester... your scalp can absorb the chemicals, which might or might not have an effect on a developing fetus (hence waiting until after 16 weeks)... and at the end, because you become more sensitive to chemicals towards the end of a pregnancy. If she does decide to color her hair, make sure she does it at a salon or in a well-ventilated room if she's self-coloring.

I dye my hair and I'm pregnant. I was told by my midwife to wait until I was 4 months pregnant before coloring my hair again. This was so that the baby's organs and stuff could grow a little bit before I put that stuff into my system.

I also then went to my salon and told my colorist that I was preggers and she used a different kind of dye on me. I don't know what it was, but I would highly recommend that you don't do it yourself and go see a colorist who knows what they are doing and what chemicals they are using.

After asking my midwife she said it was ok. I died my hair 3 times to try and get a really bright red and I also permed it. My boyfriend didnt agree because this is his first baby and he read on one website where it says not to. My midwife told me there was no research that ever proved it was not safe to dye the hair.

the matters with hair dyes and being pregnant is that being pregnant differences your "chemical" shape. What won't have stricken you in the previous (like coloring your hair) could difficulty you at the instant. a chum of mine wound up with 2nd degree burns on her scalp whilst she had a sprint up accomplished to her bleaching for the duration of her being pregnant. additionally the fumes from the chemical compounds in dyes and perms might properly be poisonous for the duration of a being pregnant. I advise you seek for advice out of your physician to make certain.

The only thing she would have to worry about is her hair turning an unexpected color instead of the one choosen because of the hormones but I've talked to/seen alot of pregnant women dye they're hair and it turn out just as expected!

its fine, they have NO PROOF, that it effects the fetus, no proof means nothing bad has happened.
i hear that possibly it could go in through the scalp and somehow get in your bloodstream, i think its bs, but i was cautious anyways. i highlighted my hair using a highlighting cap so dye wouldnt touch my scalp and also a well ventilated room.
i wouldnt dye her whole head, i mean it all should be fine, but some highlights are fine too for a temporary fix
good luck with the new baby!
