Has the classic definitions down. However the yahoos currently in the Whitehouse are not conservatives. Because of them there is no more money for the democrats or liberals to take.

The terms Liberal and Conservative mean many things to many people.

Some positions associated with liberalism in the United States
1. individual freedom
2. freedom of speech and the press
3. unalienable human and natural rights
4. separation of church and state
5. equality of opportunity for all regardless of race, age, religion, income, sex and sexual orientation.
6. the value to society of working people

In the United States and western Europe, conservatism is generally associated with the following views, as noted by Russell Kirk in his book, The Conservative Mind:

1. "Belief in a transcendent order, or body of natural law, which rules society as well as conscience."
2. "Affection for the proliferating variety and mystery of human existence, as opposed to the narrowing uniformity, egalitarianism, and utilitarian aims of most radical systems;"
3. "Persuasion that freedom and property are closely linked: separate property from private possession, and the Leviathan becomes master of all."
4. "Faith in prescription and distrust of 'sophisters, calculators, and economists' who would reconstruct society upon abstract designs."
5. "Recognition that change may not be salutary reform: hasty innovation may be a devouring conflagration, rather than a torch of progress."
There is currently debate over whether the policies of the George W. Bush Administration accurately reflect American conservative values: Peggy Noonan, writing for the Wall Street Journal, recently said, "For this we fought the Reagan revolution? A year into his second term, President Bush is redefining what it means to be a Republican and a conservative.

In America a "liberal" is usually socially progressive (support more personal freedom) and economically protectionist/socialistic (support more economic regulation and government run aid programs). An American conservative is usually socially conservative - for lack of a better word "old fashioned" (support legislating morality), and economically liberal (supports less economic regulation).

----
LIBERALS usually embrace freedom of choice in personal matters, but tend to support significant government control of the economy. They generally support a government-funded "safety net" to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation
of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations,
defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.

CONSERVATIVES tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently support laws to restrict personal behavior that violates "traditional values." They oppose excessive government control of business, while endorsing government action to defend morality and the traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market economy, and endorse strong law enforcement.

Liberals have a mind unto them self...
Conservatives would rather be told what to do...

Liberals learn from the school of hard knocks...
Conservatives learn from traditions....
