No, they didn't believe the world would end on December 23, 2012. This is an urban legend.

I have a Bachelors in History and a Masters Degree in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, and I've studied Mayans.

The Mayans, as a culture, viewed time as NOT linear, but circular. This actually explains many of their practices and traditions.

So, logically, a Mayan would never believe in the "end" of the world...seeing that circles do not end. However, they did believe in rebirth and new eras, so that would explain their fascination with 2012.

It's a good question, and I think that most historians and scholars in the field would refer to the Mayan's circular mindset and argue that, no, the Mayans never believed the world would end.

Note: these are my personal beliefs and are not backed up by any 'scientific' evidence. I have read extensively, and these are my intuitive reactions to what I have read.

The Mayan calendar ends around this time because this is when the solar system crosses the ecliptic, the centerline of the galaxy. When this happens the gravitational forces of the galactic core will affect the solar system in ways only the ancients have experienced. My personal belief is that when this happens we will experience a reversal of the magnetic poles of the earth. This will set up some 'interesting' imbalances for a while. I also believe that most of the major pyramid building of aprox 10,500 years ago was a way of rebalancing the earth to stabilize its orbit after the last polar shift. The ancients weren't as 'primative' as we arrogant moderns like to think they were. In fact, I'd bet we've lost a whole lot of interesting technology over the millenia.

not only the Mayas
dont worry the planet will survive ,but it is unlikely that we will
many predictions are for the years between 2012 and 2020
Nostradamus, the mayas ,Egyptions Jesus ,and Terrance Mckennas time wave who put the magnetic out put of the world in to a computor projection that stopped at zero in 2012,this stops the globe and it starts turning into
the other direction ,the resulting change of currents will turn the planet into a giant washing machine cleaning the surface

then there are the meteor showers you mentioned ,the gulf of Mexico is the result of one that would have made life exstinct for a while ,this would result in an other ice age if the globe is covered in dust

then there are natural disasters
Volcanos are coming to life everywhere
the weather has giant storms like hurricanes ,tornados ,tidal waves ,earth quackes

a shift of the earth crust ,like a changing of the poles
under Anrarctica were found fosilized tropical plants indication the pole must have been in a different place then (the mainland atlantis is thought to be under it )

Now we got Global warming to contend with (see my answer on global warming)

and the USA appears to be gunning for a global nuclear conflict .it is most likely that this will get us first looking at present politics

but the planet will probably survive unless humanities bombs result it to be knocked out of its orbit

so many ends to choose from
if it wasnt so serious it would be rediculous

meanwhile enjoy life .and make the most of it at least we are all in the same boat

Mayans are gone ...and according to their calender its the end of some 26,000 yr cycle that ends when all planets and the sun line up from what i understand from my reading on it supposed to be like a pole shift or something....and yes the Mayans did belive the world was going to end on that date Dec 21 2012

No the mayans did not say this, it is a theory based on the fact that thier calendar ends on this date and the fact of some planetary alignment that happens every 26,000 years or so. It could very well be that is all they were calculating in the first place. It is theorists who created the belief and not the mayans, no one knows for sure why thier calendar ends on that date..it is purely speculation.

they did no longer think of it might end regardless of the undeniable fact that that's barely while their calendar ends, to me that's barely very weird and wonderful that they've a calendar that is going so a techniques and then only stops, and the date is quite December 21 2012 in case you apart from would seek for astronomy approximately 14 days previously from on the present time the solar would be aligned with some thing else in the galaxy that must be yet another rationalization why human beings think of the international is going to end in this date

its the end of a cycle -- not the end of the world. remember before they year 2000 you wrote the years as 98 and 99 but then everything had to be readusted to accomodate 4 digits instead of 2? its more like that. from my understanding of the culture we are at the bottom of a cycle -- cycles dont' really end. things can only get better from here -- or well from 2012 anyway.

I don't believe so , it is the "Shift" , these things happen every 12,000 or so years .. I would have to look it up and then we would have thousands of conflicting views.. Stay with the non mainstream religion views as they will be closer to what will take place... We may even be evolving into the 4th dimension , that is a Spiritual leap , nothing happens overnight... It is after all the beginning of the age of Aquarius is it not ???
