You were told in Secondary or High School that you would not be learning how to read Shakespere because you were too dumb.

Believe it or not, that is what some schools are doing. They are refusing to teach the students how to read Shakespere because they think the students are too dumb. So they will teach the students how to read web pages.

What is you opinion on this?

While I would say knowledge of Shakespeare's works and plots is important, actually reading his works is not of great benefit. Before anybody shoots me for this - consider what Shakespeare wrote...

Plays are designed to be enjoyed by an audience. Only a select few people are intended to read them. He was writing for the stage.

Shakespeare was also a master poet, and wrote a number of sonnets and other works. These are designed to be read and listened to.

I think anybody who wants to read Shakespeare should go ahead, but I don't think having high schoolers read Olde English is as important as teaching them what Shakespeare was writing about, and teaching them what the effects of his works were. Call me crazy.

Learning about web pages is of paramount importance to people today, because this is how we get 90% of our information. The internet is a tool. It also happens to be a tool through which you can read the works of William Shakespeare, if you so desire.

I think that is generalizing, which is unfair. What if some students really hae the potential in it? I think lessons should be made interesting. Every subject can be learned if being taught a proper way. There's no need to give the reason that 'students are dumb' if teachers can't teach well. so if we won't be taught literature, might as well scrap literature.

The computers have made people dumb. There is no need to learn anymore. Everyone has it too easy. Everyone bitches that mexicans come over here and take away jobs, yet 98% of the bitchers would not do that job, even if it was the last job on earth. The schools are just adapting to that mentality now.

My first thoughts are:

If kids today aren't smart enough, but the generation before WAS smart enough, then, shouldn't we be a little bit concerned about where our society is headed???

It is genetic, parenting, diet???

Either way, it sounds like we had better get to the BOTTOM of the problem. And FAST.

Great. Kids are having difficulties so instead of getting them extra help, let's dumb it down.
I'm not sure who's idea this is, but it's ridiculous. Let's tell the kids they are dumb instead of teaching them. Educators never cease to amaze me with their own stupidity.
