To drive up Monday's weekend box office numbers. Also larger audience base with most people not working on weekends.

I think there are two reasons for that:
a. Friday is considered to be a auspicious day for all religion, so producers demand releasing it on that day. People in film society are more superstitious than anybody else. Yah, it's true!
I came across one incident - I went to a post production (editing) house where my friend was working but they did not allow me inside. They told me that editing for some arjun (tamil star) movie is going on. The producer's lucky number is 5, so exactly 5 people are inside. If I go they felt it would be unlucky (!?) for the producer and in turn for his film.
b. Second, of course most people have already answered - to gain collections during the weekend, remember movies are all about money. With crores of money involved any producer would wish to gain as much as possible in a short span of time.

Friday being a good 'third' weekend day, as is Monday, added to Saturday and Sunday they are likely days/nights that people are able to stay out late, unlike the rest of the week. Therefore, they are great nights for revenue at the theatres. Restaurants, motels, hotels and taxis are other beneficiaries of the 'weekend' revenue bonanza.

Friday is auspicious day for muslims and next two days are the weekend days so that a good number of people can see the movie and big rush is attracted.

Friday is the weekend. Many people have saturday and sunday as holiday. Hence after a druelling week long work people can go for entertainment on friday evening.

Releasing them on a weekday night could skew the success rating of the release. They use the prior week of the release to advertise and hope for the hype to bring the movie goers in.

people will feel free on friday, since they get out of work or school, and they get money cuz of friday pay day, and thats best time to go c movie. also people like it new when they watch movies, and friday to sunday its fairly new

The same reason gas always goes up on Friday-- IT'S PAYDAY- and everyone goes out for the weekend---It's true about the gas- watch it--- it goes down on Tuesday and stays down until Thursday evening and up on Fridays---
