Do reality shows teach you anything in particular? what is the main point? They are called reality right? but what reality are they living in if the people that play in them are just playing their roles (acting). Anyone have a good answer for this?

For one, I don't think there is any moral issue being served. The shows are merely another avenue to provide entertainment. The only reason there is entertainment, besides the fact that there are people that like to entertain us, is to make money for the producers of the show, whatever it happens to be. For the entertainers the payoff is some level of celebrity and of course a paycheck.

Are they true reality? Of course not. But I suppose they are certainly much more "real" than a true scripted offering like a soap opera. A show brings together a number of people who have auditioned or volunteered to be on the show and they are required to live somewhere together or do various things either together or individually. While it isn't necessarily "scripted" moment by moment, thats the reality part, the activities are obviously scripted and set up to be entertaining for us to watch. Once they film the activities it is sent to an editor who then crafts an even more entertaining version of all the activities, and that is what we see on TV.
The people on the shows are as real as me and you, but it wouldn't exactly be entertaining to watch me or you simply go about our daily activities. So they simply take these real people and put them into real situations that would not normally be part of anyones daily lives.
Anyway, that is my spin on it.

reality shows stretch the concept of reality. event the first "reality" show real world on mtv the first cast has talked much about how unreal the experience was. everyone that has ever done one will tell you its all staged.

reality tv found a niche -- it can be produced for about 1/4 of the price of a regular show because the staff of a reality show for some strange loophole doesn't have to be gild. in short reality tv is all about maximizing the profits.
you can vote reality tv off of your tv. shut it off.

I personally do not care for them. Think I watched one or two episodes of "Survivors" when it first came out. I thought it was, in some ways, mean, hurtful, demeaning, sneaky, lying, etc. and definitely not something I wanted to fill my mind with.

Just an opinion from an opinionated girl.
