Sounds like your in computer floppy drive is fried.
Easy fix would be buying a USB floppy drive (just plugs right into your USB port, no "instal" needed) for around $20, like the link below -

Pretty cheap and easy way to add a floppy drive. Just plug in and use!

Well, first check to make sure your floppy is okay. Put a fresh floppy in the drive and format it, then try to copy a file to it. Finally try and copy that file back to the hard drive and open it. If any of that process fails, then you know the drive is malfunctioning.
With your computer off, open the case. You'll see a flat ribbon cable going from the motherboard to the back of the floppy drive. Rest your arm on the edge of the case and carefully check to see that both ends of the cable are pushed all the way in. Don't push too hard, you want to "bruise the tomato, not crush it."
Close up the case, turn on the computer, and try again. If that doesn't work, you probably have a bad floppy drive. Contact HP and get a replacement.
If you have to keep using floppies, consider an external floppy drive. If you don't HAVE to keep using floppies, USB flash drives are inexpensive and far more reliable than floppies. They have much more capacity too. A 128mb flash drive will run you $10 at the most and is almost 100 times larger capacity than a floppy.

Your computer is a year old and has a floppy drive? Are you sure it's not like a super disk or something else? What is the model of your computer? Looking up the specs would make it easier to answer your question.
A 1.44mb floppy drive is almost useless in today's computing world; in fact, floppies have been more or less obsolete for at least 5 years. I would recommend getting a USB flash drive. These are portable just like a floppy drive and should work on pretty much any computer.

I would highly recommend switching to a USB drive. You can get them quite inexpensively these days, and some have a keyfob attached so you can carry it on your keys.
If, for some reason, this is not an option (i.e. the school computers don't have a USB drive, or you have a lot of floppies you need to get data off of), then go to Circuit City or a similar store and you can pick up an external floppy drive for $30 or so.

If your floppy drive is broken, I recommend buying another one. There are seperate Floppy Drives that you can plug into your computer using the USB Drive. A year ago, if the drive didn't work, you could have go where you bought the laptop and tell the store owners, the drive is broken. They should let you switch to another computer. Hope this helps!!Oh, and I used to have the exact same laptop. Anyways, good luck with your teaching and your problems!

It could be any number of things - damaged hardware, no drivers, or maybe you haven't formatted the floppies. If it's still under warranty, take it back to the shop to get checked out.
But really, get a USB stick, they're much more convenient nowadays and can hold a lot more data.

What is a floppy drive? They are all crap now and are very easily damaged by dust and what not. Mine have never worked either. just go to a cd burner.
