insecurity. and pride. Unfortunately too many of us do not have the humility to conduct respectful conversations. Pride is the enemy. remember that.

I guess it is personal matter ( same as family, nationality, etc)that has been a cause for a lot of hostility in the history of mankind. Many people have been discriminated against becaus e of religion and these are sensitive about it and want to protect it. The ones who have not been discriminated against because of it tend to be smug about it. "See, no one bothers me and I am Ok so this religion must be right".
Plus religion of most people is inherited and is not really " theirs"- it is transfered through tradition so it is part of family heritage. It involves having your parents teach you that, your personal memories of going to church with your family, etc.
Most people's faith is blind and passed on through the warm and well-meant teaching by parents, so few want to discuss it because it will harm a very personal foundation of their lives and throw them into confusion. If we challenge it because it seems illogical to us, they feel like we are insulting their parents and community that taught them that it was a good thing and a correct thing at that.
Unless we are actually attending a meeting meant for religious debates, it is in one's best interests not to discuss it. Lest you get involved in serious confrontations.
