World War One lasted from 1914 to 1918. It started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, followed by Austria's declaration of war on Serbia, and. The two sides that were fighting were the Allied powers: Russian Empire, France, British Empire, Italy, and the USA; and the Central powers: Austria-Hungary, German Empire, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The Allies won, and many new countries formed in central and eastern Europe as a result of this war.

The First World War had started in 1914, after years of hostility between France and Germany. Britain had been pulled into the war as an ally of France, having signed the Entente Cordial in 1904. When the war broke out, Germany had attacked France by storm and had almost taken Paris, when the French retaliated with a head on assault at the Marne, stopping the German battalions but not defeating them. A stalemate resulted, with each side digging defensive trenches along a line from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier.
The British army joined the French, pursuing a weary campaign of sniping at the enemy from the trenches, interrupted by occasional forays over the trench walls and coming face to face with the enemy. The Americans joined the trenches in 1917, and brought in tanks in an attempt to break the deadlock. After four years of dogged fighting and a total of 10 million deaths, it became clear that the German army could not carry on the fight. The Germans were running out of materiel, facing starvation at home, and frustrated soldiers were deserting. In October 1918, the German generals asked for a cease fire.
There were long and protracted negotiations. The Germans would not surrender and the Allies, British French and Americans, had fought too long to accept that kind of a truce where the other side remained fully armed. They needed the Germans to disarm, and demanded severe conditions for an armistice. On 10th November 1918, the German government collapsed and the Kaiser abdicated, leaving the German army no choice but to accept the Allies terms. It was mutually agreed that each side would simultaneously cease fire the next day, 11th November, at noon, German time, corresponding to 11-00 A.M. British time.
At the treaty of Versailles, 1919, the Allies insisted that the German state, forfeit a considerable amount of territory, in the hope that an emaciated Germany would not be able to go to war again. This hope was thwarted in 1939, when the Germans precipitated the Second World War.

First of all there are many aspects to WWI. What is it about WWI are you looking into?
For example, Russia pulled out because they had a Civil War on their hands between the Reds & The Whites. The USA didn't join the Allied forces until the last year of te War because The USA was practicing Isolationism at the time that WWI broke out. It was only AFTER the sinking of the Lusitania did The US get involved. What sparked WWI..literally? The Archduke Ferdinand was assasinated..but what led up to this assasination? What was the REAL cause of WWI? What were the events that led up to Archduke Ferdinand being shot & killed? What were the consequences of WWII?
I dislike when people come on here practically begging someone to write their paper or report for them. You know how to use a computer; do a Google search or, even more easy, look up your subject in Wikipedia. And if you REALLY can't find anyhing on your subject, THEN try here. But at least try and do the basics yourself or cough up some $$$ for one of us to write it for you.
Look I did the wikipedia for you...it will answer your plea:"can anyone tell me ANYTHING about world war 1? please? "
Yes. Go use the link I provided.

Okay, first of all, contrary to popular belief, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, archduke of Austria and heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is nothing but a pretext to the start of the war. It is not the real reason.
There are 4 main elements that explain the start and length of World War I :
- Ethnic and national conflict in the Balkans
- The Alliance System in Europe which had divided the continent into two blocs : France and Russia on one side, Germany and Austria on the other
- The structure of the military systems (military leaders stupidly thought that the war would be over quickly and having misunderstood the teachings of Clausewitz, they thought that the advantage would belong to those who attacked first)
- The absolute ignorance of state rulers in all matters pertinent to conducting war (they just blindly trusted the military leaders)
In the end, World War I lasted for so long because nobody knew how to finish it (much like the war in Iraq now). So many people had died, so much had been lost, that no country wanted to just quit without having gained something. Sovereigns no longer trusted each other enough to negotiate peace. As I said, everyone thought that the war would be over in a matter of months, but innovations in rail technology meant that troops could be resupplied with food, munitions and men.

There are two ways one can understand this conflict - by reading non-fiction, or by reading fiction. I am sure you know what the differences between the two are. For non-fiction I suggest 'The Great War: Perspectives on the First World War'. For fiction I suggest a best-selling classic (that was made into a film twice), 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. I have read both books, they told me a lot about the Great War.

Lusitania was actually in 1915 and was a British ship with few American passengers on board, and the Zimmerman telegram was actually the last straw that brought the U.S. into the war in 1917. It was a telegram to the Mexican gov't stating that if they launched an attack on America, Germany would restore the southwest to Mexican control.

it started with the assasinhation of a member of the austo-hungarian royal family in 1914, eventually engulfed all of europe and asia minor from france to the caspian sea. the united states entered the war after the sinking of the luxury liner lusitania in 1917. it ended with an armistace at 11 am, nov 11, 1918 signed in a railway car, which was later used by adolph hitler to accept the surrender of all french forces in 1940, to the nazis after the french military was defeated, and the britisah had escaped annihilation by the rescue and removal of over 330,000 french and british at the port city of dunkirk in anything that would float.
