I'm putting the head back together on my 95 nissan 240sx. I measured valve lash and there isn't enough clearance so I need new shims (thinner shims). Can I send out the shims i have to a machine shop and have them shave down the shims I have? I don't see why not.

most machine shops charge from $75 to $125 per hour with a 2 hour min. In order to lap down shims it would exceed the amount spend to replace them with the correct ones. Did you grind or cut the valves or valve seats. If you did--you may find that your valves are too far recessed into the head or the stems are too long--did you dress up the valve stem ends too?-You may have to.

Buy the new shims. WAY cheaper than machining the old ones.

If you're cheap, buy used ones I recommend measuring them first of course. Go look in a junkyard or on ebay
