It is not surprising Aquino would be a disciple of Gandhi. He was the leader of a resistance movement against a corrupt regime supported by an imperial power (in this case, the United States).

Almost every revolutionary in Asia (and many other nations) saw Gandhi as a role model for successful resistance to opression.

As to the People Power Movement in the Phillipines and the Free India Movement -- both were grassroots, both were non-violent. And both Gandhi and Aquino were assassinated (both shot, in fact) for their political beliefs.
Both Aquino and Gandhi went to jail for their political beliefs; both fasted in protest.
